About and FAQ

Hi! I'm Keira, and I created this site because, as a childless woman, I found it was difficult to find good books to read that didn't center pregnancy or parenthood.

NoKidsBooks has two aims:

1. To help childless and childfree people find books that reflect their lives and experiences, and are 'safer' to read for people in deep grief.

2. Running the Inclusive Libraries Project, to encourage libraries to stock books by, for, and about childless and childfree people, and embrace us as part of their communities.

Not all of us do, of course. But for many of us, we want to see our role models and realities reflected in what we read, at least some of the time.

For childless people in particular, there can be periods of deep grief. During these times reading can be a solace, but finding pregnancy or parenting becoming a key plot point part way through can be very triggering. Miracle babies, happily-ever-after pregnancies, unplanned pregnancies, and "the meaning of life is parenthood" messages are particularly hard to bear.

Books are added to the lists on the recommendation of childless people, and taken from websites and book clubs about childlessness.

To get on the list, the book needs to feature a childless or childfree protagonist (for fiction and biography), be about childlessness (for non-fiction), and not have major triggers.

If you'd like to add a book to the list, please read the criteria here, and send me an email.

There are several ways to get involved!

You could suggest a book , or ask your library to buy a book or celebrate World Childless Week.

If you work with a library, check out the Information for Librarians.

As community hubs, libraries should include and celebrate all parts of the community, and this includes the 20% of adults who don't and won't have children.

You can read more about why and how libraries can include childless and childfree people here.
